Arvind Kejriwal Booked in Haryana Amidst Delhi Polls
New Delhi: A day before Delhi heads to the polls, a police case has been filed against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The case, lodged in Haryana, accuses him of making inflammatory statements regarding Yamuna water pollution, sparking a significant political controversy.
According to reports, the case has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of inciting riots, promoting hatred, making false accusations with intent to cause harm, and committing acts that insult religious sentiments.
Allegations Against Arvind Kejriwal
The controversy stems from Mr. Kejriwal’s recent statements alleging that the Haryana government is deliberately contaminating Yamuna’s water. His remarks have escalated tensions among political parties, with the matter even reaching the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Mr. Kejriwal has been vocal about what he calls “poisoning of Yamuna”, and in a bid to substantiate his claims, he has even challenged political leaders and the Election Commission to drink the water themselves.
Election Commission’s Response
Responding to Kejriwal’s claims, the ECI demanded evidence, to which the AAP leader stated, “We have four bottles… we will send to each one of them… please drink and show us. Then we will believe.” He also cited a Delhi Jal Board report indicating that ammonia levels in the Yamuna had risen to 700 times the normal level, making it hazardous for human consumption.
However, the Election Commission reprimanded Kejriwal, stating that while high ammonia levels were noted, his claim that Haryana’s government was intentionally poisoning the water to commit genocide in Delhi was misleading and could incite regional hostility.
Political Leaders Respond to the Controversy
Haryana CM Takes a Sip of Yamuna Water
In an attempt to refute Kejriwal’s allegations, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini released a video of himself drinking Yamuna water. However, AAP members claimed that he had spat it out immediately after.
Rahul Gandhi’s Criticism
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took a swipe at Kejriwal, pointing out that he had previously promised to clean Yamuna within five years but had failed to do so. “I would ask him to drink it (Yamuna water). We will meet in the hospital after that,” he quipped at a recent rally.
PM Modi’s Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi weighed in on the controversy, stating that the BJP-led Haryana government would never poison the water he himself consumes. He further accused Kejriwal of making baseless and sensational claims to divert attention from AAP’s governance failures in Delhi.
Impact on Delhi Elections 2025
With Delhi elections just a day away, this legal action against Kejriwal has sparked heated debates and could influence voter sentiment. The AAP, BJP, and Congress are engaged in an intense battle, and this controversy has added another layer of complexity to an already high-stakes election.
As Delhi voters prepare to cast their ballots, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact the final outcome. Will Kejriwal’s claims resonate with the electorate, or will BJP’s counterattack prove more effective?
